Pool Pump Shaft Seal Size Guide: PS-201 / PS-1000 / PS-3868 Families and Which Pumps Use Them

October 6, 2026 · POOLPOINT Technical Team · 12 min read

The mechanical shaft seal is the one part that every pool pump in North America shares in principle and almost none share in practice. A Hayward Super Pump, a Pentair WhisperFlo and a Jandy Stealth all put a spring-loaded carbon face against a ceramic seat on the motor shaft. But the shaft under those faces is 3/4" on one pump, 5/8" on the next, and 13/16" on the third, and a seal of the wrong bore either will not press onto the shaft or spins on it and leaks the day it goes in.

The industry solved this decades ago with generic seal numbers — the PS-series from U.S. Seal — that most OEM part numbers map onto. Once you know which family a pump belongs to, you know the shaft size, which heavy-duty version to specify for a salt pool, and which two or three seals cover most of the trucks in your fleet. This guide is that map, checked against the manufacturer cross-reference tables and against what we actually stock. Two earlier articles cover the diagnosis and the hands-on procedure — how to tell a shaft seal is failing and the Hayward Super Pump seal replacement — so this one stays on the question of which seal.

The four families that cover most pads

Two numbers matter when you identify a seal: the shaft bore, and the family. The family is what the generic number encodes, and it fixes the bore, the seat outside diameter, the seal height and the head style all at once. These are the families you will meet on residential and light-commercial pools.

Family Shaft bore Typical pumps Heavy-duty (salt / ozone) version
PS-201 3/4" Hayward Super Pump, Super II, MaxFlo (SP2800X); Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro, Dyna-Glas, Dura-Glas II, DJ series; Pentair SuperFlo VST, IntelliFlo XF, Hydropump, L-Series; Jacuzzi Magnum, RC, LTH; American Products Americana PS-3868 (Viton), PS-201V-CMS on some Sta-Rite and Pentair variable-speed models
PS-1000 5/8" Pentair WhisperFlo, IntelliFlo, Universal Booster Pump; Sta-Rite HP and CF series; Waterway Champion 56-frame; Polaris PB4-60 booster; American Products Eagle, Ultra-Flo, Power-Glass; Astral Astramax 1600 PS-3865R
PS-200 5/8" Pentair Challenger, Dynamo, SuperFlo, Pinnacle, OptiFlo; Sta-Rite Dura-Glas and Max-E-Glas (PE/PEA); Hayward cast-iron and 5060 booster; Jacuzzi A, J, K, Cygnet, Vector; Speck; Gecko Flo-Master CP/HP/XP PS-3867
PS-3890 5/8" Jandy Stealth, PlusHP, FloPro, ePump, Max HP, WFTR (new style, serial P08FF0001 onward); Hayward TriStar, NorthStar, EcoStar; Polaris PB4SQ booster PS-4280

Three smaller families fill the gaps:

  • PS-4231, 13/16" bore — the old-style Jandy Stealth, PlusHP and MHPM pumps with the stepped shaft (serials before P08FF0001), OEM R0445500.
  • PS-601, 3/4" bore — Jandy JHP, JHPU, HHP and HHPU, and a number of Waterco and spa pumps. Same bore as PS-201 but a different seat and height; the two are not interchangeable.
  • PS-2131, 5/8" bore — Hayward PowerFlo and Turbo-Flo above-ground pumps, Gecko Flo-Master FMCP and Tub-Master spa pumps, Doughboy. Its salt version is PS-3869.

Shaft bores above are from the seal manufacturers' published data and match the dimensions on our own listings. The pump lists are condensed from the U.S. Seal cross-reference guide; a pump that has been re-motored or upgraded may not follow its original family, which is why the section on reading the old seal matters.

PS-201 and PS-3868: the 3/4" family

This is the family most service trucks carry the most of, because Hayward Super Pump and Super II dominate residential pads and both take it. Hayward's own number is SPX1600Z2; our PS201 carries the Hayward SP-1600-Z2 reference and covers the standard-duty application. The same seal is what Sta-Rite specifies on the Max-E-Pro, Dyna-Glas and Dura-Glas II, Pentair on the SuperFlo VST and Hydropump, and Jacuzzi on the Magnum and RC lines — so a technician who learns the 3/4" seal on a Super Pump already knows it on half a dozen other pumps.

Pump shaft seal assembly, PS-201 family (PS201)

The standard PS-201 is a phenolic carbon primary ring, a ceramic seat, Buna-N elastomers and stainless hardware. It is a good seal on a conventionally chlorinated pool at moderate temperatures. It is not the seal to put on a salt pool, a pool with an ozonator, or a spa that runs hot.

That is what PS-3868 is for. It keeps the same 3/4" bore and the same fit as PS-201, so it drops into every pump on the PS-201 list, but the elastomers are Viton and the running faces are carbon graphite against a harder seat, with stainless metalwork throughout. Salt water attacks the spring and the Buna boot on a standard seal; ozone attacks Buna outright. Our PS-3868 carries the PS-201 and PS201 references and the Sta-Rite 37400-0028S reference for that reason: it is the direct heavy-duty replacement for all of them.

On a salt pool the price difference between PS-201 and PS-3868 is not worth debating. The seal is the cheapest part in the rebuild and the most expensive one to do twice, because a leaking seal drips onto the motor bearing.

PS-1000 and PS-3865R: the 5/8" Pentair family

The WhisperFlo and IntelliFlo are the reason this family exists in quantity. Pentair's own reference is 071734 (071734S for the current packaged seal); the generic number is PS-1000 and it is a 5/8" bore. The same seal appears on the Waterway Champion 56-frame, the Sta-Rite HP series, and — a fact that surprises some technicians — the Polaris PB4-60 booster pump, whose OEM seal P55 cross-references PS1000.

We stock this family two ways. The bare seal is inside the PS-1000 repair kit with the o-rings and gaskets a WhisperFlo or IntelliFlo needs at the same time, and 074564 is the seal-plate gasket and shaft-seal kit for the same pumps, carrying the Pentair 074564, PS-1000 and 25357-300-000 references. For the Champion 56-frame and other 5/8" pumps in salt service, 1000V-9 is the 5/8" seal with Viton elastomers.

WhisperFlo and IntelliFlo seal plate gasket and shaft seal kit, PS-1000 (074564)

The heavy-duty version of PS-1000 is PS-3865R. If you are building a salt-pool truck stock, the pairing is PS-3868 for the 3/4" pumps and PS-3865R (or a Viton PS-1000) for the 5/8" Pentair family.

PS-200 and PS-3867: the other 5/8" family

PS-200 is also a 5/8" seal, and the question every parts counter gets is why it is not the same part as PS-1000. The bore is the same; the seat diameter and the head are not. A PS-200 goes into Pentair's Challenger, Dynamo, SuperFlo and OptiFlo, Sta-Rite's Dura-Glas and Max-E-Glas (Sta-Rite 17304-0100S), Hayward's cast-iron pumps and older booster pumps, and the Jacuzzi A, J, K and Cygnet series. A PS-1000 will not seat in those pumps, and the reverse is also true.

Our PS200 is the standard seal and cross-references the heavy-duty PS-3867; our PS-3867 is that heavy-duty seal and carries the PS-200 reference. Between the two, a rebuild on any pump in this family is covered for both chemistries.

PS-3890, PS-4231 and PS-601: the Jandy question

Jandy pumps are where the most seal mistakes happen, because the same pump body was built with two shafts. Stealth (SHPF/SHPM) and PlusHP (PHPF/PHPM) pumps with serials before P08FF0001 have a stepped motor shaft and take the 13/16" seal, Jandy R0445500, which the seal manufacturers list as PS-4231. From P08FF0001 onward the shaft is plain and the pump takes the 5/8" seal, Jandy R0479400, which is PS-3890 — the same seal used on the FloPro, ePump, Max HP and Water Feature pumps, and on Hayward's TriStar, NorthStar and EcoStar. The Jandy Stealth rebuild guide walks through reading the serial and measuring the seat if the label is gone.

We stock both sides of that split: R0445500 and PS-4231 for the 13/16" old-style pumps, R0479400 and PS-4231-OS for the 5/8" pumps (the latter is the carbon-and-ceramic 5/8" seal listed for FHPM, SHPF and SHPM). Note that PS-4231-OS, despite the shared prefix, is the 5/8" seal, not the 13/16" one — read the bore, not the number.

Jandy's JHP and JHPU (and the HHP/HHPU) are a third case. They take a 3/4" seal, but it is PS-601, not PS-201: same bore, different seat and height. Our PS-601 is that seal, and GO-KIT77-9 is the seal kit for the JHP with the o-rings that come off with it.

Reading the old seal

When the pump label is missing and the motor has been changed at least once, the seal that comes out is the most reliable witness. Three measurements identify it.

  1. Bore. Measure the inside diameter of the rotary half where it rode on the shaft: 5/8", 3/4" or 13/16". Callipers are better than a ruler here; the difference between 3/4" and 13/16" is a sixteenth.
  2. Seat outside diameter. The ceramic seat pressed into the seal plate. PS-201 seats are noticeably smaller than PS-601 seats even though both are 3/4" bore; PS-1000 and PS-200 differ the same way at 5/8".
  3. Head style. Whether the spring sits inside a metal cup or runs bare against the rotary face, and whether the rotary half has a rubber boot or a metal collar.

With the bore and seat diameter, the family table above resolves almost every residential pump. If the seat is chipped or the rotary half is missing, fall back to the pump model and the cross-reference guide.

Installing any of them

The families differ in size; they do not differ in how they fail on installation, and the failures are almost always in the technician's hands rather than the part.

  • Keep the faces clean. Fingerprints on the ceramic seat or the carbon face are the most common cause of a seal that drips within a week. Handle both by the edges. If a face is touched, wipe it with a clean lint-free cloth and a little rubbing alcohol before assembly.
  • Lubricate only the rubber. A film of water or a pool-service seal lubricant on the rubber boot and the seat's outer rubber cup helps them press home. Nothing on the faces — no grease, no silicone.
  • Seat square. Press the ceramic seat into the seal plate with even pressure through a clean sleeve or the old seat as a driver, never with a screwdriver at one edge. A cocked seat is the second most common cause of an early leak.
  • Replace the seal whenever the impeller comes off. A disturbed seal rarely reseals. This applies to a clog clearance as much as to a rebuild.
  • Run wet. Fill the strainer pot before restoring power. A dry start burns the carbon face in seconds.

Check the seal area after the first full run and again on the next visit. Salt pools deserve the Viton seal on the first visit, not the second.

What is aftermarket work and what is OEM-only

Shaft seals are a normal aftermarket item. The generic PS-series numbers exist precisely because the seals are standard mechanical components used across brands, and the dimensions can be verified against the OEM part with callipers. We manufacture the standard and heavy-duty seals listed here to those dimensions, and we tell you the elastomer and face material on every listing.

The one thing to keep OEM-specific is the seal plate or backplate when it is worn: a scored seat bore lets even a correct seal weep, and the plate is a moulded part matched to the pump body.
