The shaft seal is the part that keeps pool water out of the motor. When it goes, water tracks along the shaft, gets past the slinger, and kills the bearings — which is why a leaking seal that costs a few dollars turns into a motor replacement if it is left for a season.
How to tell the seal has failed
Three symptoms, roughly in the order they appear:
- A drip from the gap between the pump housing and the motor. Not from a union, not from the lid — specifically from that seam. This is the seal weeping.
- Rust streaks down the motor face. By this point water has been getting in for a while.
- A rising whine or growl from the motor. That is the bearings, and at that stage the seal is no longer the expensive problem.
A seal that is only weeping under pressure will often look dry when the pump is off. Check it while the system is running.
Why they fail
Almost never from wear. The two real causes are:
- Running dry. The ceramic and carbon faces are cooled and lubricated by the water passing them. Thirty seconds dry is enough to score them. A leaking suction line, a blocked skimmer, or a closed valve on start-up will all do it.
- Chemical attack on the elastomer. High chlorine or low pH hardens the rubber cup until it stops following the shaft. Common on saltwater systems where the cell has been running long hours.

If your customer quotes the older number, it is normally safe to supply the current one — but confirm the motor frame first. The seal is common across frames; the housing gasket is not.
Before you order a case
- Measure the shaft, do not trust the model badge. Motors get swapped, and a re-motored pump may not take the seal the badge implies.
- Order the o-ring set at the same time. A seal replacement means opening the housing, and putting an old housing gasket back is how you get a callback.
- Check the shaft for scoring. A new seal on a grooved shaft will leak again within weeks. If the shaft is marked, the customer needs a motor, and telling them that up front is worth more than the sale.
