A leak under a pool pump is a reason to investigate, not a complete shaft-seal diagnosis. A useful repair request describes the equipment, the first visible leak location and any recent work. That information is more reliable for parts selection than a broad description such as “pump leaking.”
Collect observations before ordering
Record the complete pump model, when the leak appears, where water first becomes visible and whether the pump was recently serviced. Photograph the cover, connections and motor-side joint. Report unusual noise separately; it should not be treated as proof that a particular seal kit will fix the pump.
Do not remove covers, reach into equipment or loosen fittings while the system is energized or pressurized. Have a qualified service technician identify the fault and follow the relevant equipment manual.
Identify the component, not just the family name
A shaft seal, housing gasket, diffuser gasket and cover seal are different parts. Similar prefixes or a shared pump family do not make their numbers equivalent. Ask for the exact diagram reference and a photograph of the removed component when the marking is unclear.

Prepare the replacement job
Before disassembly, agree which parts are being replaced, what the kit contains and whether additional gaskets or damaged housings need separate attention. Use the manufacturer's sequence for isolating power, releasing pressure, opening the pump and handling the seal.
In particular, do not guess a lubrication method, tightening value or impeller-removal direction from a generic article. Consult the manual for the actual pump. Hayward's Super Pump manual contains a dedicated shaft-seal replacement section and startup instructions; other pump designs require their own instructions.
Record the outcome
After service and the prescribed startup checks, record whether the original leak remains, whether any other leak is visible and whether the original operating complaint is resolved. If a replacement fails early, investigate the operating conditions and installation rather than automatically repeating the same order.
For fleet or distributor purchasing, keep the approved sample, supported model, packing list and supplier reference together. A kit reference should describe a defined bill of materials, so later deliveries can be checked against the same requirement.
