This filter grid / DE element is a compatible replacement for the Hayward original, supplied as the Filter Element Locator for Pro Grid Vertical D.E. Filter. In service it provides the surface that holds the diatomaceous earth cake doing the actual filtering. Replacement is routine: the fabric tears and the manifold sockets split, which sends DE powder back into the pool. Ours is built with polypropylene fabric on a rigid frame.
