Every salt-chlorinated pool eventually runs without its cell: the cell goes out for acid cleaning, gets sent in under warranty, dies mid-season while a replacement ships, or comes off the pad for winter storage. The question is what fills the hole in the plumbing while it is gone. What a dummy cell is
A dummy cell is a pipe section molded to the same length and thread pattern as the electrolytic cell it stands in for. It contains no electrode plates and no electronics; it simply completes the plumbing run with the same unions and O-ring seals the real cell uses, so water flows through the pad exactly as before. Nothing connects to the chlorinator's cell cord, which stays capped or tied off while the dummy is installed.

Why the pool keeps running fine without the cell
A salt cell is a generator, not a filter: the pump, filter, and heater neither know nor care whether the cell in line is producing chlorine. Removing the cell, though, leaves a gap in the plumbing on pads that are blown out and left assembled rather than fully broken down.
A dummy cell closes that gap cleanly:
- Shut off power to the pump and the chlorinator at the breaker, and relieve pressure at the filter's air relief before opening any union.
- Unscrew the cell unions, remove the cell, and drain it.
- Install the dummy cell in its place with the O-rings seated and unions hand-tight, then cap and secure the cell cord.
- Store the real cell indoors, dry, out of sunlight.
- In spring, reverse the swap and the system is back on salt in minutes.
The pad stays sealed for winterizing and blow-out, nothing is left open to collect debris or insects, and the fragile, expensive component spends the winter on a shelf instead of in the ice.
Servicing and diagnosing with the pool still running
The same part earns its keep all season:
- Acid-washing a scaled cell. Cells need periodic cleaning in areas with hard water. With a dummy in the line, the pool circulates and stays swimmable during the soak instead of the tech rushing the job at the pad.
- Warranty and replacement gaps. When a cell goes back to the manufacturer or a replacement is on backorder, the dummy keeps the system whole for however long that takes.
- Troubleshooting. When a chlorinator throws flow or cell errors, pulling the cell for bench inspection is a standard step. The dummy lets the tech leave the customer's circulation running rather than shutting the pool down.

Why a bypass cell beats a hard-plumbed bypass
Some installers plumb a permanent bypass loop with valves around the cell. That works, but the comparison favors the dummy cell for most pads:

- Nothing to set wrong. A valve bypass left half-open sends unmeasured flow past the cell and confuses output; a dummy cell is binary — the cell is either in the line or it is not.
- Fits pads with no room. Many equipment pads have no straight pipe available for a bypass loop. The dummy needs zero extra space.
- Cost. One molded part against tees, valves, pipe, and labor is not a close call.
The hard-plumbed loop still makes sense on large commercial systems where cells are swapped constantly. For residential and light commercial service, the dummy cell does the same job with less to go wrong.

Match the dummy to the cell family, not the pool.
