Most of this site argues that aftermarket parts are a sound commercial choice. This article is the other half of that argument, because a supplier who claims every part is interchangeable is either not thinking about it or hoping you are not. Some parts sit inside a certification boundary, and substituting them transfers risk in ways that are not obvious until something goes wrong.
The principle: certification applies to the assembly, not the part
A gas-fired pool heater is certified as a complete appliance. The listing covers a specific configuration — this burner, this gas valve, this ignition control, this high-limit switch, wired and plumbed this way.
The certification does not follow the individual components. It describes the assembly. Which means substituting a component with a functionally equivalent one can invalidate the listing for the appliance, even when the substitute is technically identical, because the certification was never about that part in isolation.
This is the part that surprises people: the substitute being good does not resolve the problem. The problem is the certification boundary, not the quality.
The categories to stay out of
Gas train components. Gas valves, orifices, burners, manifolds, pilot assemblies, pressure regulators. Anything metering, controlling or burning fuel gas.
Safety devices. High-limit switches, thermal fuses, pressure switches performing a safety interlock, flame sensors, rollout switches. These exist to shut the appliance down before something bad happens. Their function is to fail safe, and the specification includes the failure mode, not just the trip point.
Ignition and combustion control. Ignition modules and control boards that manage the combustion sequence.
Anything electrical inside a listed appliance enclosure. Wiring harnesses, connectors and terminal blocks carry approvals for the enclosure and its environment.
Why this is also a bad business
The commercial argument points the same way as the safety one, which is unusual and worth noticing.
When we investigated the electronic-control side of heater parts, we found that many of the components carry the original manufacturer's part number unchanged — a pressure switch in one brand's catalogue is a standard industrial part, number and all; a thermal fuse is a component that sells for cents in volume.
That is the end of the opportunity, not the start of it. If a part is a standard industrial component, your customer can buy it from the component manufacturer's distributor. There is no cost advantage and no differentiation — you are adding a step. Meanwhile you have taken on certification risk for a part with no margin in it.
The general rule: the more a part is pure re-badging, the less business there is in it. Value sits where tooling sits, and tooling is not in the safety-critical categories.
The grey areas, and how to think about them
Some parts sit near the boundary without clearly being inside it.
Header and flange gaskets on a heater. Sealing components, not combustion components — but they are inside the appliance and see high temperature. Our position is that these are legitimate aftermarket parts provided the material and temperature rating are correct and specified. R0327500, R0304300 and the header assemblies 006706F and 006707F are in this category: sealing hardware, no safety function, but the material specification genuinely matters.
Heat exchangers. Pressure-containing, expensive, and involving joining processes that are not commodity work. Not a certification issue in the same way, but a manufacturing capability question that deserves a direct answer about who makes it and how it is tested.
Salt cells. Electrical and in contact with the water. Aftermarket cells exist and are widely sold; the questions are electrode plating quality and control-box compatibility, and the answers vary by supplier.
The test to apply: does this part have a job to do when something goes wrong? A gasket seals. A high-limit switch interrupts. The second is inside the boundary; the first is not.
What to do when a customer asks anyway
Service companies will ask for parts in these categories, because the OEM part is expensive or on back order. A straight answer serves everyone better than a sale:
- Say which category the part is in and why you do not supply it
- Point them at the equipment brand's channel for that specific item
- Offer what you can supply around it — the gaskets, seals and hardware that go with the repair
This costs you one line item and keeps the relationship. A distributor who has told a customer "not that one, and here is why" is more trusted on everything else in the catalogue.
The advice that applies regardless of supplier
If you are stocking heater parts, get the boundary in writing from someone qualified in your market — your insurer, your legal counsel, or a certification body. The line differs by jurisdiction and by appliance type, and it is not something to determine from a supplier's catalogue.
What you can do without advice is the sorting: separate your heater-parts range into sealing and structural components on one side, and anything touching gas, ignition or safety on the other. The first group is a normal aftermarket business. The second is a different conversation entirely.
