This valve is a compatible replacement for the Pentair original, supplied as the Top Valve Assembly, 1-1/2-Inch, for 5-Position and 8-Position Top Valves, Compatible with Pentair. In service it controls the direction and shut-off of flow through the equipment pad. It is a wear item: the internal seals harden and the seat wears, so the valve no longer holds position or seals cleanly.
