This seal is supplied as the Shaft Seal for Water Ace Pumps for use in circulation pumps. In service it keeps water out of the motor side of the pump while allowing the shaft to rotate. This is a consumable in practice: the sealing faces score and leak, which lets water reach the motor bearings — a failure that destroys the motor if left unattended.
