The Adapter, 8-1/2-Inch, Buttress Threaded, Compatible with Pentair is an aftermarket union / fitting built to replace the original component in Pentair valve assemblies. In service it connects sections of plumbing and allows equipment to be removed without cutting pipe. This is a consumable in practice: the nut threads strip and the seat distorts, so the joint can no longer be sealed by hand. Ours is molded in PVC / reinforced thermoplastic.
